How to use rsync to copy files, folders and backup in Linux

Posted by Daniela Mehler

Go2Linux posted a tutorial about copy files and folders with rsync

rsync is a software application for Unix and Windows systems which synchronizes files and directories from one location to another while minimizing data transfer using delta encoding when appropriate. An important feature of rsync not found in most similar programs/protocols is that the mirroring takes place with only one transmission in each direction. rsync can copy or display directory contents and copy files, optionally using compression and recursion.
In daemon mode, rsync listens on the default TCP port of 873, serving files in the native rsync protocol or via a remote shell such as RSH or SSH. In the latter case, the rsync client executable must be installed on both the local and the remote host.

Debian Security Advisory DSA-2164-1 security@debian.org
http://www.debian.org/security/ Nico Golde
February 16, 2011 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : shadow
Vulnerability : insufficient input sanitization
Problem type : local
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CVE-2011-0721

Kees Cook discovered that the chfn and chsh utilities do not properly
sanitize user input that includes newlines. An attacker could use this
to to corrupt passwd entries and may create users or groups in NIS
environments.

Packages in the oldstable distribution (lenny) are not affected by this
problem.

For the stable distribution (squeeze), this problem has been fixed in
version 1:4.1.4.2+svn3283-2+squeeze1.

For the testing (wheezy) and unstable (sid) distributions, this problem
will be fixed soon.

We recommend that you upgrade your shadow packages.

How to use find with boolean operators AND, OR, NOT

Go2Linux posted a tutorial about using find with boolean operators AND, OR, NOT

In these days when disk are everyday bigger and bigger as well as cheaper, you will find yourself storing everything, we almost never delete a file anymore, we just store it. But, I do not know about yourself, but sometimes it happens to me, that I can't just remember where a given file, picture, or song was archived.
So, I know I have it, somewhere in my disk, but not know where. You you might think I am not too organized, and you will be right with that statement,

Debian 6 Squeeze Review

Desktop Linux Reviews posted a full review of Debian 6 Squeeze, including a gallery of screenshots.

It wasn’t too long ago that I did a very late review of Debian 5. I’m happy to say that it didn’t take me nearly as long to get around to the latest release, Debian 6 Squeeze. If you aren’t familiar with Debian then this release is a great chance to learn about a distro that is the foundation for a lot of other distributions including Ubuntu, Linux Mint and others.

Go2Linux posted Vim search and replace tips

In every document editing software search and replace is a desirable function or feature, that is also true in text editor software. If you are programing, editing lists, or CVS files, you will need almost for sure, some search and replace tool, I use vim for almost all text editing work I need to do. Search and replace on vim is pretty similar to what you do we you use sed to find and replace words in text files.

Ubuntu Vibes takes a quick look at the second alpha version of Ubuntu 11.04 'Natty Narwhal'

The biggest change in Ubuntu 11.04 is the Unity interface with Compiz as a backend for it. Unity will have two versions, one for systems capable of 3D hardware acceleration and another one, Unity 2D for low end systems.

Unity launcher now have auto-hide mode turned on by default so that windows can take full screen space. Also Unity Applications and Places shortcuts have been added to the Unity launcher but are barely functional.

Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 2 released

Posted by Daniela Mehler

The second alpha version of Ubuntu 11.04 is available

Welcome to Natty Narwhal Alpha 2, which will in time become Ubuntu 11.04.

Pre-releases of Natty are *not* encouraged for anyone needing
a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into
occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended
for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing,
reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 2 is the second in a series of milestone CD images that
will be released throughout the Natty development cycle.
New packages showing up for the first time include:
* LibreOffice 3.3 (has replaced OpenOffice.org 3.2)
* X.org Server 1.10 and Mesa 7.10
* Linux Kernel 2.6.38-rc2.

Unity is now the default in the Ubuntu Desktop session. It
is only partially implemented at this stage, so keep an eye on
the daily builds, new features and bug fixes are emerging daily!

Alpha 2 includes a number of software updates that are ready for
wider testing. Please refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/alpha2
for more detailed information on the new features and known issues
with this development release of Natty.

You can download Alpha 2 ISOs here:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/natty/alpha-2/ (Ubuntu Desktop and Server)
http://uec-images.ubuntu.com/releases/natty/alpha-2/ (Ubuntu Server for UEC and EC2)

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/natty/alpha-2/ (Edubuntu DVD)
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/mythbuntu/releases/natty/alpha-2/ (Mythbuntu)

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a
list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please
see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/natty/alpha2

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Natty, have a look at the natty-changes mailing list:

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/natty-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list
if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a
low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of
approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other
interesting events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:
