UK embedded show features Linux training

An embedded conference in the U.K. will feature a two-and-a-half hour workshop on embedded Linux, as well as a session on using commercial embedded Linux distributions. The Embedded Masterclass 2009 conference is scheduled for May 7 in Cambridge, UK, and May 12 in Bristol, UK.

The two-and-a-half hour Embedded Linux Workshop targets professional engineers interested in learning more about real-time and embedded Linux. The workshop covers theory and hands-on practice on topics including cross-development tools, root file systems, and kernel configuration and compilation. Additional lessons include booting with U-boot, working with Busybox and Tinylogin, and understanding user vs. kernel space.

The workshop will once again use a ConnectCore Wi-9C ARM development board target, the Digi JumpStart Kit for Linux, and a desktop Linux-based host development system. Attendees should have good 'C' programming skills, general knowledge of a real-time operating system (RTOS) or embedded OSes, and ideally, knowledge of basic Linux/Unix commands. The workshop is managed by British embedded software training firm Feabhas Limited .

The larger Embedded Masterclass conference features a presentation called "Developing embedded systems with a commercial Linux," given by Aschwin Marsman. Marsman is a long-time Linux developer currently working for MontaVista as Solution Architect for UK and Benelux. The presentation is said to weigh the "Buy vs. DIY" pros and cons, as well as show the benefits of commercial Linux distributions for mobile development.

Other sessions include presentations on developing GUIs, using 3D visualization tools for interface optimization, as well as sessions covering code analysis, low-power RF communications integration, and concurrent development. Exhibitors include MontaVista, Lauterbach, Kontron, Enea, and Aonix.
