COM Express module gets low-power options

RadiSys announced four new 45-nanometer CPU options that significantly reduce the power consumption of a COM Express module it introduced only recently. The Linux- and Windows-ready Procelerant CEGM45 is now available with three additional Core 2 Duo CPUs, plus a 1.2GHz Celeron M, says RadiSys.

The Procelerant CEGM45 was first introduced in July, with the 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo T9400 processor (code-named "Penryn") that was also introduced that month. As before, the 3.7 x 4.9 inch (95 x 125mm) CEGM45 targets applications such as medical and machine imaging, but its new processor choices -- like the T9400, all manufactured via Intel's 45-nanometer process -- can give the device better battery life in portable applications, says RadiSys.

Still using the Mobile GM45 Express chipset, the CEGM45 supports up to 8GB of DDR2 memory in dual 4GB channels. It is said to offer memory bus speeds in excess of 1GHz. The four new device configurations are as follows:2.26GHz Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor, with 6MB second-level cache, 1067MHz frontside bus, and 25 Watt TDP
1.86GHz Core 2 Duo SL9400 processor, with 6MB cache, 1067MHz FSB, and 17 Watt TDP
1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo SU9300 processor, with 3MB cache, 800MHz FSB, and 10 Watt TDP
1.2 GHz Celeron M 722 processor [PDF], with 1MB cache, 800MHz FSB, and 5.5 Watt TDPAccording to RadiSys, the Core 2 Duo T9400 CPU -- still offered to CEGM45 buyers who want it -- has a TDP of 35 Watts. Substituting the lower-power processors, however, apparently cuts device power consumption by amounts ranging from 30 to 80 percent.

Processors aside, the new CEGM45 configurations are much as before, including microSD sockets, four SATA ports, and eight USB 2.0 ports. Most versions come with a Type 2 COM Express pinout, including IDE functionality. The SP9300 version, however, has a Type 3 pinout, and it replaces IDE with a second gigabit Ethernet port, according to RadiSys.

Specifications cited by RadiSys for the CEGM45 include:Processor:2.53GHz Core 2 Duo T9400, with 6MB second-level cache, 1067MHz frontside bus, and 35 Watt TDP
